INITIAL RESEARCH FOR NEW FILM MAGAZINE -TASK 6

Initial Research For A New Film Magazine

   Most Popular Film Magazines:
  • Entertainment Weekly
  • Total Film
  • Empire
  • Variety
  • Sight and Sound
What Makes These Film Magazines Popular?
The key marketing tactic to sell magazines is the front cover. For example, Empire magazines have brightly coloured covers and usually boasts a famous celebrity of an upcoming movie or T.V show as the centre point of the front cover.  The use of brightly coloured imagery draws the viewers attention, whilst the face of a popular celebrity may further intrigue the viewer to purchase the product.

Empire:
Empire Magazine is one of the world's most popular film magazines, with 205 thousand copies sold in 2016 in the UK alone. Although the sales in physical copies has decreased dramatically over the last 10 years, with 316 thousand copies sold in 2006, this is still a huge figure for a film magazine.

The eye capturing imagery of bright and contrasting colours and use of celebrities on the front cover, as previously mentioned, contributes to Empire being one of the best selling film magazines. However the front cover won't keep the consumers interest for long and is not the only factor in making a good magazine. The contents must also be just as, if not more, engaging to the consumer. Therefore articles such as interviews with celebrities with upcoming projects will be littered throughout the magazine as well as a wide array of different film reviews. Empire magazine also host regular competitions for their readers as another tactic to keep reader interest.

Empire/Total Film: Comparison
Empire and Total Film both have very similar design tropes on their front covers. Brightly coloured imagery and popular celebrities are effective marketing tactics for selling copies. Both magazines contain similar use of articles and reviews. However, even with all the similarities, Empire continues to lead in sales in the US. This is most likely due to Empire being around longer than Total Film, therefore being seen as 'the original' to long-time consumers.
